En 1996, Panasonic se lance dans la production d’appareil photo numérique. Le premier prototype s'appelle Panasonic VZ-XP1. Le Panasonic CardShot NV-DCF1, est produit en 1997, suivi la même année du DCF2, plus compact. Le Panasonic NV-DCF3 sort sur le marché le 20 janvier 1998. C'est le 1^er modèle entièrement fabriqué par Matsushita Electric Industrial Co¹. Le corps en aluminium brossé lui donne un aspect de haute qualité. L’appareil offre des fonctions telles que compensation de luminosité, retardateur, zoom numérique, mode macro, balance des blancs automatique ou manuelle avec pas moins de 15 réglages.

L'appareil a cependant un défaut majeur c'est son objectif doté d’une bonnette macro escamotable et ce, sans mise au point automatique. De fait, pour les prises de vues rapprochées, la mise au point doit être estimée sur l’écran de faible définition.

Panasonic a également commercialisé, quelques mois plus tard, une imprimante photo couleur de même design appelée NV-MPD1 sur laquelle l'appareil photo pouvait se connecter directement.

Panasonic, originally founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita, is a diversified conglomerate that encompasses a wide range of businesses. Today, it comprises 680 companies involved in electrical equipment, including battery production, household appliances, and electronics such as radios, TVs, video cameras, and DVD players. Its success initially began with the introduction of an innovative double socket and other simple electrical equipment by its founder.

It appears that optical and purely photographic equipment was never a primary focus of the Matsushita Group, as their strength primarily lay in electronics. Alongside numerous other brands, including National, Technics, JVC, and Panasonic, the latter brand now serves as the name of the holding company. This well-known label, particularly in the United States, allowed them to enter the photographic product market. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they introduced some consumer-level film cameras alongside more sophisticated video cameras.

Today, the group produces Lumix digital cameras (APNs), which are highly regarded in their class.
